Program details

Overview

Fine Arts at Mount Allison University builds studio and critical skills across drawing, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture and installation, and open media, alongside coursework in art history and theory. Mount Allison was the first Canadian university to grant a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in the visual arts, and the program is offered as a BFA combining studio, art history, and elective credits, or as a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts with a required minor for students seeking a broader arts education; a stand-alone minor is also available. Instruction takes place on the Sackville campus at the Purdy Crawford Centre for the Arts, with access to the Owens Art Gallery, one of Canada's oldest university art galleries, and an on-site art conservation lab. Faculty are practicing artists, and the program offers paid internships and artist-in-residence opportunities, plus interdisciplinary links with Drama Studies. BFA applicants submit a portfolio alongside their university application. The program suits students pursuing careers as artists, curators, designers, illustrators, conservators, or art educators, and those planning further study in creative fields.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Fine Arts's programme page sets no academic prerequisites of its own and defers to Mount Allison's general admission requirements. There, decisions weigh the whole applicant — academic record, leadership, level of commitment, and potential for personal growth — with the specific courses and grades required varying by the applicant's province or country and prior education. Applicants whose language of instruction was not English must meet Mount Allison's English proficiency requirement: IELTS Academic 6.5 with no band below 6.0, or TOEFL iBT 90 with at least 20 in each of Listening, Reading, Speaking, and Writing (PTE Academic 60 with no score below 51, CAEL CE 70 with no part below 60, Cambridge English B2 First/C1 Advanced/C2 Proficiency 176 with no band below 169, and Duolingo English Test 110 are also accepted). Three years of Canadian secondary schooling, or 30+ credit hours at an English-medium post-secondary institution, can also satisfy it; applicants short only on language may receive conditional admission through the university's English Summer Pathway Program. Fine Arts applicants must also submit a dedicated Fine Arts application and a portfolio by February 15; the Department of Fine Arts hosts an annual Portfolio Day where applicants can get feedback before their official submission.

Application Details

Application Deadline: Deadline to submit the Fine Arts application and portfolio (BFA or BA in Fine Arts) is 15 February 2027 for the 2027-28 (Fall 2027) intake.
