Overview
Visual and Material Culture Studies at Mount Allison University is an interdisciplinary Bachelor of Arts offered as a major (60 credits) or honours (72 credits), with a minor in Visual Communication and Culture (24 credits) and an undergraduate certificate in Visual Literacy and Culture (18 credits). The program combines two streams, visual culture and material culture, examining forms of expression that are neither verbal nor textual — images, objects, spaces, and performances — and asking what these reveal about how they were made, adopted, circulated, preserved, displayed, and read across different cultures and historical periods. Sample course topics include anime, fashion, Roman archaeology, maps and empire, and intercultural communication. Students take part in experiential learning and faculty-supervised research, with access to the Centre for Early Modern Visual Culture and an archaeological field school in Italy. It suits students drawn to interpreting images and objects across cultures, preparing graduates for work in the arts, culture, and creative industries; communications and media relations; government and not-for-profit leadership; heritage and conservation; journalism and publishing; tourism; and marketing and advertising.

Mount Allison reviews the whole applicant: decisions weigh academic record, leadership, commitment, and potential for growth, varying by degree, education level, and country; routes are published for high-school, transfer, CEGEP, IB, Cambridge GCE, mature (22+), and home-schooled applicants. As English is the language of instruction, applicants may be asked to prove proficiency with one of: IELTS Academic 6.5 (no band below 6.0); TOEFL iBT 90 with at least 20 per section (before Jan. 21, 2026) or the redesigned TOEFL at 4.5 overall, 4.5 Writing, 4.0 elsewhere (from that date); PTE Academic 60 (no score below 51); CAEL CE 70 (no part below 60); Cambridge English B2 First/C1 Advanced/C2 Proficiency 176 (no band below 169); or Duolingo 110 (Comprehension 125, Literacy 120, Conversation 110, Production 95). Three years of English-medium Canadian secondary schooling or 30+ post-secondary English credit hours can also satisfy this; applicants just short of it may get conditional admission via the English Summer Pathway Program. It is offered as a minor combinable with any Mount Allison degree.

Application Deadline:Mount Allison uses rolling admission with no fixed general deadline: for the 2027-28 (Fall 2027) intake, early admission based on final Grade 11 marks opens 1 October 2026, general admission with mid-year Grade 12 transcripts opens in February 2027, and 1 March 2027 is the deadline to submit all application documents for admission and scholarship consideration. The deadline to accept an offer and pay the registration deposit is 1 May 2027. Bachelor of Music applicants must submit their application package by 1 February 2027, and Fine Arts (BFA/BA) applicants must submit their portfolio by 15 February 2027. International applicants follow the same published dates; Mount Allison does not publish a separate international deadline, so admission remains rolling until programs are full.
