Program details

Overview

Physics at Mount Allison University is offered as a Bachelor of Science major (63 credits) or honours (87 credits), with a minor (24 credits) and combined honours options in Mathematics and Physics (90 credits) or Computer Science and Physics. Teaching follows an experiential approach, with first-year courses combining short lectures, lab work, and collaborative learning, and students using an integrated laboratory-classroom, optics labs, and the Mount Allison Gemini Observatory. Coursework covers classical mechanics, relativistic theory, quantum mechanics, and nuclear physics, extending in advanced study to astrophysics, electricity and magnetism, statistical mechanics, medical physics, electronics, thermodynamics, and solid state physics. Faculty are involved in active research, with opportunities for students to take part. The program suits students drawn to hands-on scientific investigation and quantitative problem-solving. Graduates pursue careers such as geophysicist, aerospace engineer, astrophysicist, artificial intelligence developer, and technical sales representative, with many continuing into graduate or professional programs in physics or into applied fields such as photonics, materials science, or biomedical engineering.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: The Physics page states no admission requirements of its own and defers to Mount Allison's general admissions process (admission-requirements page). Mount Allison reviews the whole applicant: decisions weigh academic record, leadership, commitment, and potential for growth, varying by degree, education level, and country; routes are published for high-school, transfer, CEGEP, IB, Cambridge GCE, mature (22+), and home-schooled applicants. As English is the language of instruction, applicants may be asked to prove proficiency with one of: IELTS Academic 6.5 (no band below 6.0); TOEFL iBT 90 with at least 20 per section (before Jan. 21, 2026) or the redesigned TOEFL at 4.5 overall, 4.5 Writing, 4.0 elsewhere (from that date); PTE Academic 60 (no score below 51); CAEL CE 70 (no part below 60); Cambridge English B2 First/C1 Advanced/C2 Proficiency 176 (no band below 169); or Duolingo 110 (Comprehension 125, Literacy 120, Conversation 110, Production 95). Three years of English-medium Canadian secondary schooling or 30+ post-secondary English credit hours can also satisfy this; applicants just short of it may get conditional admission via the English Summer Pathway Program. It is offered toward the Bachelor of Science.
