Overview
The Bachelor of Social Work is a four-year degree after which graduates are eligible to register with the Alberta College of Social Workers. The curriculum covers social justice, diversity and Indigenous ways of knowing, along with mental health, addictions, trauma, advocacy and Indigenous perspectives, building skills in engagement, assessment, intervention and advocacy. Students choose between two concentrations, Generalist Social Work or Child Intervention, and learn through a mix of simulation labs, classroom-based instruction and work-integrated placements in community, healthcare and government settings. Study abroad and field school experiences are also available. Practicum participation requires a Police Information Check, Intervention Record Check, immunization verification, N95 mask fit testing and CPR certification. The program suits students seeking to support individuals, families and communities through ethical, trauma-informed and anti-oppressive practice across a range of social work settings.

Admission Requirements: Direct entry from Alberta high school requires five Grade 12 courses, including English Language Arts 30-1 (minimum 65%) and Social Studies 30-1, Social Studies 30-2 or Aboriginal Studies 30 (minimum 60%), plus three further courses from Groups A, B or C. Post-secondary transfer applicants are assessed on GPA, which varies by program, and mature applicants need at least two Grade 12 courses. Applicants whose first language is not English must complete any English course required for the program and meet Mount Royal's institution-wide English Language Proficiency requirement, met by, among other options, IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with at least 5.5 per band, TOEFL iBT 86 overall with at least 20 per section (4.5 overall with at least 4.0 per band for tests taken from January 21, 2026), PTE Academic 58 with at least 55 per area, CAEL 70 with at least 60 per band, or Duolingo English Test 120. Before practicum placement, students must provide a Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector and Intervention Record Checks, current immunization records including rubella, N95 mask fit testing for acute-care placements, and CPR certification, all at their own cost. The Fall 2026 early admission period ran October 1, 2025 to February 1, 2026.
