Overview

The Master of Education and Master of Arts in Education programs in Elementary and Middle School Education are curriculum-based programs concerned primarily with teacher development. They focus on curriculum and teaching and the relationship between them, grounded in a broad concept of research that encourages critical examination of teaching in elementary, middle, and junior high schools. Students examine their own teaching practice and are encouraged to develop their own curriculum materials across subject areas such as language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. The Master of Education route requires 5.0 units of coursework, including 2.0 units distributed across these subject-area strands plus graduate electives, while the Master of Arts in Education route requires 4.0 units of coursework plus a 1.0-unit thesis; some students may need to complete additional prerequisite courses before beginning core coursework.

Admission Requirements: To be admitted, applicants must ordinarily hold a bachelor's degree together with a Bachelor of Education or equivalent, and have at least one year of successful teaching experience, normally at the elementary or middle school level. Only students who show the potential to perform well in graduate studies, normally with a minimum average of B (GPA 3.0) and positive letters of recommendation, are considered. Admission is competitive; a limited number of part-time students are admitted each year, and students wishing to study full-time should contact the program head.
