The Bachelor of Education (Elementary/Secondary) at Mount Saint Vincent University, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, is a two-year, ten-unit professional program that develops the skills, knowledge, and dispositions of a professional educator through reflective practice and diverse teaching and learning methods. Students choose between an Elementary stream, which centres on the young learner and core subjects such as mathematics, language arts, and science, or a Secondary stream, which focuses on contemporary culture and critical thinking across two teaching disciplines such as social studies, English, mathematics, science, or French. The program is offered in a 14-month accelerated format starting in May or a traditional 20-month format starting in September, and includes up to 24 weeks of supervised practicum placement in a classroom setting with experienced teachers, plus an optional four-week Community Placement in the second year. Students are supported toward Nova Scotia teacher certification, which they can receive alongside their degree at convocation and which is generally recognized by other Canadian provinces and territories for initial certification, sometimes with additional coursework. It suits students preparing for careers as classroom teachers or in related education roles.
