Overview

This certificate teaches essential skills for helping people with everyday living needs, working under the oversight of licensed nurses, including practical skills such as bathing, dressing, and mobility assistance alongside theoretical knowledge gained through classroom activities and labs. Clinical training includes two placements spanning both multi-level care and community-based settings, and Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition may cover up to half the program based on prior experience. Graduates can then register on BC's Care Aide and Community Health Worker Registry.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Domestic applicants only. Priority admission for Indigenous applicants. Basic computer skills, and reliable transportation to clinical placement sites, are required. Before clinical placement, students must provide a Criminal Record Check, a completed Personal Immunization form validated by a healthcare professional, current Standard First Aid with CPR Level C, and a valid Food Safe Level 1 certificate.

Application Deadline: This is a limited-entry program at NIC: for the 2026/27 cycle the application deadline is the last Monday of August for a September start, the third Friday of December for a January start, or five days before the start date for a mid-term intake; seats go by date of a complete, qualifying application.
