Overview
The Health Science Diploma is designed with flexibility in mind and will allow students, with the right combination of electives, to progress to a variety of post-diploma options on Vancouver Island or at institutions further afield. The program emphasizes scientific foundations, Indigenous perspectives on health, and regional healthcare needs while preparing students for careers or further education related to health science. The purpose of the Health Science diploma is to situate health and learning in the context of broader societal change and gain a better understanding of how historical and contemporary factors have shaped, and continue to shape, healthcare and health science at the regional and national levels.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission requires C in English 12 (or equivalent, a successful English assessment, IELTS Academic 6.0 or equivalent, or NIC's ENG 104), C+ in Pre-Calculus 12 (or equivalent, or a successful math assessment), and C in Physics 11 or PHY 050. Several second-year Health Science courses carry their own prerequisites -- C+ in Chemistry 12 (or CHE 060) and C in one of Life Sciences 11, Biology 11/12 or Anatomy and Physiology 12 -- which students admitted without them must complete during the programme, extending its length. Before completing the diploma every student must complete Indigenous Cultural Safety training run by the Math-Science department. The diploma has a Fall intake, is open to international applicants, and states no portfolio or interview requirement.

Application Deadline:North Island College's domestic applications open at the beginning of October each year for the following academic year; unlimited-entry programmes admit on a rolling, first-come-first-served basis with deadlines effectively at the term start (September 1, January 1 or May 1), while limited-entry programmes close earlier: the last Monday of August for a September start, the third Friday of December for a January start. International applicants apply through EducationPlannerBC; for the current cycle NIC has published deadlines of 1 May 2026 for September 2026 entry and 31 August 2026 for January 2027 entry, with no later 2027 intake deadline yet posted. Admission is otherwise rolling until seats fill. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
