Petroleum Engineering Technology is a two-year diploma at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology that prepares students for the upstream petroleum industry, covering the exploration, extraction and production of oil and gas. Coursework combines classroom instruction with laboratory-based projects using drilling simulators and industry training in the technologies and techniques used across the sector. Students also study sustainability practices and the role petroleum engineering technologists play in the responsible and efficient use of natural resources. The program runs on NAIT's Main campus with In Person delivery on a weekdays-daytime schedule, with a Fall intake. Graduates are prepared for roles with oil and gas producers, service companies and regulatory agencies in the upstream and midstream energy sectors. NAIT positions the program within its School of Energy and Natural Resources, alongside related programs such as Chemical Engineering Technology and Power Engineering Technology.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Direct entry requires Grade 12 Language Arts (English 30-2), Grade 12 Mathematics (Math 30-2), one of Grade 11 Chemistry (Chemistry 20), Grade 11 Physics (Physics 20) or Grade 12 Science (Science 30), and proof of English Language Proficiency. No competitive or minimum admission average is published for direct entry, though NAIT recommends Math 30-1 and Physics 20 or Chemistry 20 as a stronger background. An alternative entrance pathway is available for applicants who have completed a minimum of 24 post-secondary credits (or 8 courses) in a related engineering or engineering-technology program, with an admission GPA of 2.0 based on the most recently completed 24 credits.
