The Heavy Equipment Technician Apprenticeship at Northwestern Polytechnic trains registered apprentices to maintain, repair, and overhaul heavy vehicles and industrial equipment, including internal combustion engines, tracked equipment, rubber-tired equipment, and other off-highway vehicles used in the construction, mining, forestry, and agriculture industries. Apprentices learn diagnostic procedures, component overhaul, and preventive maintenance on hydraulic, electrical, and powertrain systems used in this equipment. The program combines employer-sponsored on-the-job training with four blocks of in-class technical instruction delivered on campus in Grande Prairie, each running eight weeks. Apprentices alternate periods of paid workplace employment with classroom instruction, progressing through all four technical periods and the required on-the-job hours before qualifying for Alberta's Heavy Equipment Technician journeyperson certification through Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training.
