Refrigeration and Air Conditioning - Geothermal at Nova Scotia Community College is a one-year certificate program that combines core refrigeration skills with geothermal heating and cooling technology. Students learn mechanical refrigeration systems, electrical controls, and basic soldering and brazing, training to repair and maintain residential and commercial refrigeration and air conditioning systems. Coursework covers installing copper refrigerant lines and other piping, oxy-acetylene brazing and welding, and the installation of electrical circuits and controls, alongside geothermal-specific installation techniques. A mandatory field experience component, completed in two sessions and typically unpaid, gives students hands-on exposure outside the classroom. The program begins each September and graduates are eligible for a Post-Graduation Work Permit, preparing students for careers installing and servicing geothermal and conventional refrigeration systems as demand grows for clean-energy technicians.
