Refrigeration and Air Conditioning at Nova Scotia Community College is a one-year certificate program that prepares students to repair and maintain commercial and industrial refrigeration and air conditioning systems. Coursework covers the installation of refrigerant vapour and liquid lines and other piping, basic oxy-fuel brazing, and the design, installation, and troubleshooting of electrical circuits and controls used in refrigeration systems. Students also study theoretical refrigeration principles and complete safety training, including WHMIS certification. A mandatory field experience course, typically unpaid and lasting about five weeks, allows students to apply their skills outside the classroom. The program begins each September and graduates are eligible for a Post-Graduation Work Permit. It prepares students for entry-level careers as refrigeration and air conditioning mechanics in a growing industry.
