Overview

Cosmetology is a two-year diploma covering the full range of hairstyling skills, including cutting, colour and chemical services, client consultation and salon business operations such as social media promotion. Training progresses from practice on mannequins to services performed on real clients in on-campus cosmetology salons, and is delivered mostly in person with some courses offered online. Graduation requires an approved shop kit purchased within the first two weeks of the programme, completion of 1,500 hours under the direct supervision of a Master Hairdresser instructor, and a passing grade of 70% or higher. Students must also pass a provincial licensing examination administered by the Cosmetology Association of Nova Scotia. The programme begins each September. International applicants must meet document and English-language requirements that vary by country of origin.
