Overview
The Smart Grid specialization is offered within Ontario Tech University's Electrical Engineering program, leading to a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) or, with an additional year, a Bachelor of Engineering and Management (Honours). The specialization applies communications and networking technology to modernizing electricity grids, covering networking and security, smart metering, electric energy storage systems, power quality and transportation electrification. Students build on the Electrical Engineering curriculum while gaining expertise specific to smart-grid infrastructure. All engineering students complete a common foundation year before specializing, and the program offers capstone, co-op and internship experiential-learning options, including a direct-entry co-op stream applied for through the Ontario Universities Application Centre. Instruction is delivered on-campus at the North Oshawa campus with a September start. Graduates are prepared for careers in electrical and power-systems engineering roles supporting Canada's evolving energy infrastructure.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Current Ontario secondary school students must complete the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) with six 4U or 4M credits including English (ENG4U) with a minimum grade of 60 per cent, Advanced Functions (MHF4U), Calculus and Vectors (MCV4U), Chemistry (SCH4U) and Physics (SPH4U). In addition, a combined minimum of 70 per cent average in prerequisite math and science courses is required, with no grade below 60 percent.
