This programme is a Special Education specialization within the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Educational Studies, a four-year hybrid programme combining online and in-person courses at the Downtown Oshawa campus. Students complete four specialization courses from Foundations of Special Education, Models of Inclusion, Understanding the Diversity of Educational Needs, and Technology and Assistive Tools for Special Education, alongside the core Educational Studies curriculum covering foundations of learning, digital tools for education, assessment for learning, and equity, diversity and inclusion. The specialization addresses the historical context, ethical considerations, inclusion models, and assistive technologies used to support students with exceptionalities, applying a problem-based, real-world inquiry approach. A direct-entry co-op option is available through the OUAC application. Graduates are prepared to provide consultation, training, and program development across youth and adult learning contexts, pursue a Bachelor of Education to teach kindergarten to grade 12, or continue into the Master of Education program.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Ontario Tech University states no admission requirements specific to the Special Education specialization beyond the OSSD prerequisites it lists for the Educational Studies program and its general English proficiency policy. Current Ontario secondary school applicants need the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) with six 4U/4M credits, including English (ENG4U). Admission is competitive: last year's cut-off was 70 per cent and the expected cut-off sits in the low 70s, so meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee a seat. Applicants also interested in becoming a teacher must select the Concurrent Education option from the subject of major interest on their application. Applicants whose first language is not English must present IELTS Academic 7.0, Duolingo English Test 130, or Oxford ELLT 8, per the university's Education and Nursing English-proficiency policy. The program begins each September.
