Overview
The Locksmith Apprenticeship at Red Deer Polytechnic is a three-year program training students to install, repair and maintain mechanical and electronic locking systems, master keying, safe servicing and security hardware across residential, vehicle, business and institutional settings. Coursework also covers codes and regulations, blueprint reading and non-destructive entry techniques. Each of the three 12-month training periods includes eight weeks of classroom instruction, delivered in a blended format with scheduled on-campus lab weeks, and a minimum of 1,560 hours of on-the-job training. Students must achieve a weighted average of 65%, with no section under 50%, and a minimum grade of 70% on the AIT Provincial Exam for each period. Graduates receive a Journeyperson Certificate and Diploma-level education credential. Locksmiths are typically employed by locksmithing companies, security firms and institutions, with experienced tradespeople advancing to supervisory roles or operating their own business. The program suits students seeking a security-hardware trade credential through combined work and blended classroom training.
