Overview
The Automotive Service Technician Apprenticeship at Red Deer Polytechnic is a four-year Red Seal trade program combining on-the-job training with classroom instruction delivered in the institution's shops. Each of the program's four 12-month periods includes at least 1,560 hours of on-the-job training and nine weeks of on-campus classroom instruction, split roughly 80% workplace and 20% classroom. Entry requires registration as an apprentice with a sponsoring employer; RDP does not place students with employers. To complete classroom training, students must achieve a weighted average of 65%, with no section under 50%, in both theory and practical components, plus a minimum grade of 70% on the AIT Provincial Exam for each period. On completing all four periods, apprentices receive a Journeyperson Certificate and an Advanced Diploma, and may sit the Red Seal Endorsement Exam to work anywhere in Canada. Students can also compete in the Provincial and National Skills Canada competitions and WorldSkills. Graduates typically work as automotive service technicians, service writers or shop managers.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Entry follows the Apprenticeship and Industry Training (AIT) recommended path: ELA 30-2, Math 30-3, Physics 30 or Chemistry 30 or Science 30, plus related CTS courses; or, at minimum, ELA 20-2, Math 20-3 and Science 10. Applicants may also qualify with a pass on all five Canadian GED tests or by passing AIT's entrance exam. To work as an Automotive Service Technician apprentice in Alberta, applicants must be a registered apprentice, a certified journeyperson, or hold a recognized trade certificate, and register for classroom instruction through MyTradeSecrets.
