Overview
The Ph.D. in War Studies is offered by RMC's Department of War Studies in Kingston, Ontario. The multi-disciplinary programme lets students examine human conflict across its military, diplomatic, social, political, psychological and economic dimensions, balancing practical military concerns with the demands of graduate-level scholarship. The doctoral programme normally takes five years to complete: two years of full-time coursework and comprehensive examinations, followed by three years to research, write and defend the dissertation. Coursework comprises six 600-level courses plus an additional 600-level research-methodology course (WS607), three field examinations, and a dissertation defence. To facilitate completion of course requirements, War Studies courses are also offered over the internet alongside on-campus delivery. The programme serves both military and civilian students pursuing professional or research interests in war studies.
