Overview
This flexible, fully online 30-credit degree can be completed at your own pace over two to seven years, blending social, natural, and physical sciences with humanities perspectives on environmental issues. Students take one course at a time, each running 10 to 12 weeks at 10 to 15 hours of work per week, and the program opens with a required non-credit course on academic integrity. Students can earn the Graduate Certificate in Science and Policy of Climate Change along the way, and the program is delivered in partnership with the Environmental Careers Organization of Canada, aligning coursework with National Occupational Standards for the sector. Students finish with either a six-credit research paper on a topic of their choosing or a three-credit practicum placement with an organization of their choice, with the practicum option leaving room for one additional elective.
Requirements
Minimum GPA:3.00 / 4.33
Admission Requirements: Standard admission requires a four-year (or comparable) undergraduate degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with a minimum GPA of B (3.00/4.33) and at least two years of relevant work or volunteer experience, with roughly three years of environmental-sector experience recommended as a guideline; applicants below the GPA threshold must complete the Academic Writing and Critical Thinking course before starting. Flexible admission considers applicants without the standard credential who have normally six years of relevant work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, and the same writing-course requirement applies. The programme page defers to Royal Roads' institution-wide English language proficiency requirements for applicants whose first language is not English: for graduate programs, IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with a minimum 6.5 in writing and speaking and 6.0 in listening and reading, or TOEFL iBT 88 overall with a minimum 24 in writing and 20 in listening, reading and speaking. Applicants also submit official transcripts, a one-page personal statement, two reference letters and a résumé; international credentials require evaluation at the applicant's expense.
Application Details
Start Date:January
Application Deadline:Royal Roads University sets no single university-wide deadline: domestic and international applicants apply directly to the university through the same process, and every programme page checked shows one identical deadline for both. RRU consistently closes a programme's application exactly three calendar months before that programme's own intake start date — a September 2027 intake typically closes 7 June 2027 — though a few programmes (the Master of Global Management, for example) use a six-month lead instead. Each programme lists its own upcoming intakes, running from 2026 into 2028 depending on the programme, and RRU says it may still accept a late application if space and processing time remain, but it publishes no separate international deadline and no institution-wide equal-consideration or rolling policy. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
