Program details
Overview
Blending online coursework with two intensive on-campus residencies, this master's program examines justice through an interdisciplinary lens, covering topics such as Indigenous rights, housing and poverty, gender inequality, and environmental issues alongside foundational research methods. Students share classes with peers from policing, the military, government, and non-profit and international organizations who bring diverse perspectives on complex social problems. After a shared first year, which overlaps with the university's Graduate Diploma in Justice Studies, students choose a second-year path: a thesis with an additional research course, or a coursework stream that can include a six-credit internship for field experience in a justice-related setting.
Requirements
Minimum GPA:3.33 / 4.33
Admission Requirements: Standard admission requires a four-year (or comparable) undergraduate degree in a relevant and related field with a minimum GPA of B+ (3.33/4.33); applicants must explain in their personal statement how their academic background relates to justice studies. The programme page defers to Royal Roads' institution-wide English language proficiency requirements for applicants whose first language is not English: for graduate programs, IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with a minimum 6.5 in writing and speaking and 6.0 in listening and reading, or TOEFL iBT 88 overall with a minimum 24 in writing and 20 in listening, reading and speaking. Applicants also submit two reference letters, a 2-3-page personal statement, transcripts and a structured résumé.
Application Details
Start Date:January
Application Deadline:Royal Roads University sets no single university-wide deadline: domestic and international applicants apply directly to the university through the same process, and every programme page checked shows one identical deadline for both. RRU consistently closes a programme's application exactly three calendar months before that programme's own intake start date — a September 2027 intake typically closes 7 June 2027 — though a few programmes (the Master of Global Management, for example) use a six-month lead instead. Each programme lists its own upcoming intakes, running from 2026 into 2028 depending on the programme, and RRU says it may still accept a late application if space and processing time remain, but it publishes no separate international deadline and no institution-wide equal-consideration or rolling policy. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
