Overview
This full-time, 36-credit master's degree trains tourism professionals through a year on campus followed by a year of online electives and research, with three specialization tracks in social entrepreneurship, disaster and emergency management, or sustainability. Students can add a field study at a Canadian or international tourism destination — past cohorts have travelled to Germany, Austria, the UK, France, and northern Vancouver Island — and may pursue an optional 420-hour internship for real-world industry experience. Admission cycles run in April, August, and December, and graduates of the university's Graduate Certificate in Tourism Management can apply those credits toward this degree; career paths include destination marketing organizations, tourism and hospitality businesses, and policy or consulting roles.
Requirements
Minimum GPA:3.00 / 4.33
Admission Requirements: Standard admission requires a four-year (or comparable) undergraduate degree from a recognized post-secondary institution, normally with a minimum GPA of B (3.00/4.33), plus at least two years of full-time work experience in the tourism or hospitality industry, or a pass grade for an industry-related internship or co-op of at least 840 hours over at least 24 weeks. Flexible admission considers applicants without post-secondary credentials who have normally at least seven years of progressive work experience, three of which were in a leadership role, and reviews incomplete post-secondary education case-by-case on the quality and duration of work experience. The programme page defers to Royal Roads' institution-wide English language proficiency requirements for applicants whose first language is not English: for graduate programs, IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with a minimum 6.5 in writing and speaking and 6.0 in listening and reading, or TOEFL iBT 88 overall with a minimum 24 in writing and 20 in listening, reading and speaking. Academic writing skills are also required, with an Academic Writing and Critical Thinking course recommended beforehand.
Application Details
Start Date:December, April and August
Application Deadline:Royal Roads University sets no single university-wide deadline: domestic and international applicants apply directly to the university through the same process, and every programme page checked shows one identical deadline for both. RRU consistently closes a programme's application exactly three calendar months before that programme's own intake start date — a September 2027 intake typically closes 7 June 2027 — though a few programmes (the Master of Global Management, for example) use a six-month lead instead. Each programme lists its own upcoming intakes, running from 2026 into 2028 depending on the programme, and RRU says it may still accept a late application if space and processing time remain, but it publishes no separate international deadline and no institution-wide equal-consideration or rolling policy. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
