Program details
Overview
Delivered in a blended format with two three-week residencies over 12 months, this diploma develops environmental educators and communicators equipped to engage diverse audiences on sustainability issues. Students take one course at a time over 10 to 12 weeks, with a brief break in between and roughly 10 to 15 hours of work per week, covering topics such as biosphere and sustainability, worldviews and ethics, systems perspectives, and ecopsychology, and the program opens with a required non-credit course on academic integrity. The two residencies are described as intensive and immersive, held on Royal Roads' ocean-front campus. Its credits transfer directly into the related two-year Master of Arts in Environmental Education and Communication, and graduates find roles in teaching, policy, research, and community communication.
Requirements
Minimum GPA:3.00 / 4.33
Admission Requirements: Standard admission requires completion of a four-year (or comparable) undergraduate degree from a recognized post-secondary institution, with a minimum GPA of 'B' (3.00/4.33), and at least two years of relevant work or volunteer experience; applicants meeting the degree but not the GPA requirement must complete the non-credit Academic Writing and Critical Thinking course with a passing grade. Flexible admission is available with six years of relevant work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, subject to the same writing-course condition. The programme page defers non-native English speakers to Royal Roads' institution-wide requirement: for graduate-level entry, IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with a minimum of 6.5 in writing and speaking and 6.0 in listening and reading, or TOEFL iBT 88 overall with a minimum of 24 in writing and 20 in listening, reading and speaking. Applicants must submit official transcripts, two reference letters (ideally one work-based and one academic or community-service related), a two-page personal statement on motivation and career goals, and a detailed résumé; permanent residents provide a PR card copy and international applicants require a credential evaluation.
Application Details
Application Deadline:Royal Roads University sets no single university-wide deadline: domestic and international applicants apply directly to the university through the same process, and every programme page checked shows one identical deadline for both. RRU consistently closes a programme's application exactly three calendar months before that programme's own intake start date — a September 2027 intake typically closes 7 June 2027 — though a few programmes (the Master of Global Management, for example) use a six-month lead instead. Each programme lists its own upcoming intakes, running from 2026 into 2028 depending on the programme, and RRU says it may still accept a late application if space and processing time remain, but it publishes no separate international deadline and no institution-wide equal-consideration or rolling policy. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
