Program details

Overview

This two-year blended degree pairs classroom study with two residencies, including a one-week field school held within Indigenous communities on traditional coastal territories during the second residency. There, guest lecturers and Elders share their knowledge in-situ as students study biodiversity and adaptation alongside Indigenous ways of being and knowing, deepening their practice as environmental educators and communicators. Each course runs 10 to 12 weeks with a short break in between, at 10 to 15 hours of work per week, and the program opens with a required non-credit course on academic integrity; students can build toward the degree gradually through a five-month graduate certificate or one-year graduate diploma in the same field. Graduates have gone on to roles such as environmental educator and program coordinator, environmental education coordinator, farm manager and food systems lead, and assistant professor in environmental studies or science programs.

Requirements

Minimum GPA: 3.00 / 4.33
Admission Requirements: Standard admission requires a four-year (or comparable) undergraduate degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with a minimum GPA of B (3.00/4.33), normally with at least two years of relevant work or volunteer experience; applicants below the GPA threshold must first complete the Academic Writing and Critical Thinking course with a passing grade. Under flexible admission, applicants without the standard credential are considered with normally six years of relevant work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, and must also complete the Academic Writing and Critical Thinking course. The programme page defers to Royal Roads' institution-wide English language proficiency requirements for applicants whose first language is not English: for graduate programs, IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with a minimum 6.5 in writing and speaking and 6.0 in listening and reading, or TOEFL iBT 88 overall with a minimum 24 in writing and 20 in listening, reading and speaking. Applicants must also submit official transcripts, a two-page personal statement, two reference letters, and a detailed résumé.

Application Details

Start Date: July
Application Deadline: Royal Roads University sets no single university-wide deadline: domestic and international applicants apply directly to the university through the same process, and every programme page checked shows one identical deadline for both. RRU consistently closes a programme's application exactly three calendar months before that programme's own intake start date — a September 2027 intake typically closes 7 June 2027 — though a few programmes (the Master of Global Management, for example) use a six-month lead instead. Each programme lists its own upcoming intakes, running from 2026 into 2028 depending on the programme, and RRU says it may still accept a late application if space and processing time remain, but it publishes no separate international deadline and no institution-wide equal-consideration or rolling policy. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
