Overview
The Pre-Employment Carpenter certificate program provides foundational skills for entry into the carpentry trade, aligned with the curriculum of a first-year carpentry apprenticeship. Over 12 weeks, students learn to read and interpret blueprints, identify and handle construction materials, use manual and power carpentry tools, measure and mark materials for cutting and assembly, apply cutting and shaping techniques, and use joinery methods such as nailing, screwing and adhesives. The program also covers safety practices and personal protective equipment use, along with resume writing and interview preparation. Graduates are eligible to register as apprentice carpenters and challenge the first-year apprenticeship exam, and with further training may progress toward roles such as journeyman carpenter, construction foreman or project manager. Delivery is in person at SAIT's Main Campus. The program does not accept international applicants.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants educated in Canada must demonstrate English language proficiency and complete the following courses or equivalents: English Language Arts 10-1 or 10-2, and Math 10C or Math 10-3. SAIT accepts equivalent high school courses for applicants educated outside Alberta. Applicants educated outside Canada must demonstrate English language proficiency and provide an international document assessment confirming they meet the program's admission requirements.
