Overview

Anthropology and Communication is a joint major leading to a Bachelor of Arts, offered by the Department of Sociology and Anthropology in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences together with the School of Communication in the Faculty of Communication, Art and Technology. The program examines areas where anthropology and communication overlap, including the production and commodification of culture and the relationship between communicative processes and social identity, class, and gender. Students complete 120 units in total. The anthropology component requires a minimum of 18 lower-division units, including Introduction to Anthropology and Anthropology and Contemporary Life, and a minimum of 20 upper-division units, including Contemporary Ethnography and Ethnography and Qualitative Methods. The communication component requires specific introductory and 200-level courses plus seven upper-division courses totalling a minimum of 28 upper-division units. Writing, quantitative, and breadth requirements must also be satisfied. Course sections are offered both in person, at the Burnaby and Surrey campuses, and online.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Applicants to this joint major apply to either the Anthropology or the Communication program and must meet the admission requirements for the program to which they apply. A minimum 2.50 cumulative grade point average is required to enter the major, and a minimum 2.25 cumulative grade point average is required to continue in it.
