Overview

Linguistics and Anthropology is a joint major leading to a Bachelor of Arts, offered jointly by the Department of Sociology and Anthropology and the Department of Linguistics in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. The program develops multidisciplinary expertise in the anthropological aspects of language, drawing on both disciplines' shared interest in culture, cognition, and social relations, and suits students interested in the anthropology of language, anthropological linguistics, or cognitive science, including those pursuing the certificate in Indigenous language proficiency or the certificate in Indigenous studies research. Students complete 120 units in total, beginning with lower-division coursework such as Introduction to Anthropology, Anthropology and Contemporary Life, Language, Culture and Society, and Introduction to Linguistics, followed by upper-division requirements including Contemporary Ethnography and Ethnography and Qualitative Methods alongside further anthropology and linguistics electives.

Requirements

Minimum GPA: 2.25 / 4.33
Admission Requirements: Admission to the Linguistics and Anthropology joint major, and to all Sociology and Anthropology minor programs, requires an overall cumulative GPA of 2.25 and a passing grade in LING 220 (Introduction to Linguistics), on top of Simon Fraser University's general undergraduate admission requirements.
