Overview

The Linguistics and Anthropology joint major leads to a Bachelor of Arts and combines the two kindred disciplines' shared concern with culture, cognition, and social relations, giving students multidisciplinary expertise in the anthropological aspects of language. Offered jointly by the Department of Linguistics and the Department of Sociology and Anthropology in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, the program is of particular interest to students pursuing the certificate in Indigenous language proficiency or the certificate in Indigenous studies research, as well as those interested in anthropological linguistics or cognitive science. Students complete 120 units in total, drawing on coursework from both linguistics and anthropology. To remain in the program past the lower-division stage, students must also maintain minimum cumulative and upper-division grade point averages in courses counted toward the major. Courses are delivered at SFU's Burnaby and Surrey campuses.
