Computing Science and Linguistics is a joint major offered by the School of Computing Science and the Department of Linguistics at Simon Fraser University, leading to a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science. The program focuses on computational linguistics, teaching students to construct and model systems that represent the meaning of natural language, drawing on computing, linguistics, cognitive psychology and artificial intelligence. Enrolment, appeals and graduation processing for the joint major are administered by the School of Computing Science, though students need permission from advisors in both departments to enrol. The program requires a minimum of 48 lower-division units and 45 upper-division units, made up of 24 units in Computing Science and 21 units in Linguistics. Admission to the major follows either a Computing Science entry route or a Linguistics entry route, each with its own admission criteria.

Admission Requirements: Admission to the Computing Science and Linguistics joint major follows one of two entry routes. Through Linguistics, an overall cumulative GPA of 2.40 and a passing grade in LING 220 are required. Through Computing Science, entry is by direct high-school admission, transfer from a recognized post-secondary institution, or internal transfer within SFU, with admission competitive and a separate admission average set each term for each entry route; internal transfer additionally requires a Computing Related Grade Point Average (CRGPA) of at least 2.67, a cumulative GPA of at least 2.40, completion of at least one MACM course and two CMPT courses from a specified list, with at least two of those courses completed at SFU. A grade of C- or better is required in each prerequisite course to enter computing science courses, and students must contact advisors in both departments for permission to enrol.
