Overview

SFU's MEd in Educational Technology and Learning Design is the applied, project-based counterpart to the department's MA, aimed at K-12 teachers, postsecondary instructors, corporate trainers and instructional designers who want practical skill in building technology-enhanced learning rather than a research thesis. Students take the same five core courses as the MA stream plus elective units, then finish with a two-part capstone: a learning-design development workshop followed by a demonstration-of-mastery project that produces a portfolio piece usable in the workplace. Classes are held in person at the Surrey campus with materials delivered online, and the pace can be one course per term or, on an accelerated track, up to two.

Requirements

Minimum GPA: 3.00 / 4.33
Admission Requirements: The program's own Application & Tuition page, which covers the MA and MEd routes identically, requires a bachelor's degree from SFU or its equivalent from a recognized institution, with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0/4.33 (B), or 3.33/4.33 (B+) averaged over the last 60 units of undergraduate work; graduate coursework also counts toward this average. In exceptional circumstances a student may be admitted with lower formal qualifications where there is significant relevant experience, and applicants without prior coursework in Education or Psychology may be required to take one or more prerequisite courses. Applicants whose first language is not English must supply proof of proficiency sufficient to pursue graduate studies, drawn from tests SFU lists in its online application such as TOEFL and IELTS; those educated at English-medium institutions may be exempt. Applications for the next intake, Fall 2027, open 1 October 2026 and close 26 February 2027.
