Overview

Correctional Studies is a certificate offered by the School of Criminology in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Simon Fraser University. It is designed primarily for students interested in working within the correctional system, and for criminology students who want to focus their undergraduate studies on courses relating to correctional theory and practice. The certificate requires 18 units across six courses: the required course CRIM 241 (Introduction to Corrections), plus five elective courses chosen from a list of more than fifteen approved criminology options. Students must already be admitted to Simon Fraser University, or be in the process of applying, and must complete CRIM 241 with a minimum grade of C- before declaring the certificate. To graduate, students need a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.25, calculated across several categories including overall CGPA, undergraduate CGPA and criminology-course CGPA, and courses must generally be completed at SFU unless an advisor grants an exception.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Students declaring the Correctional Studies certificate must already be admitted to Simon Fraser University, or be in the process of applying, and must have completed CRIM 241 (Introduction to Corrections) with a minimum grade of C- or better. To remain eligible to enrol in upper-division CRIM courses and to graduate with the certificate, a minimum cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 2.25 must be maintained across overall CGPA, undergraduate CGPA and criminology-course CGPA. Courses used toward the certificate must generally be completed at Simon Fraser University unless an academic advisor grants permission otherwise; transfer students may use their admission CGPA for declaration purposes.
