Overview

The African Studies certificate is offered through the Department of Political Science in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Simon Fraser University. The program focuses on the sociopolitical issues of Africa, drawing on coursework from African history, Middle Eastern studies, international relations, and political science. Students complete a minimum of 30 units to earn the certificate: 18 lower-division units, consisting of six courses on African history and politics, and 12 upper-division units, consisting of three advanced courses on African regions and themes drawn from history and political science offerings. With permission of the certificate program committee, relevant special topics courses may be substituted for courses listed in the standard curriculum.
