The Medieval and Renaissance Studies certificate at Simon Fraser University is an interdisciplinary programme devoted to the study of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, covering the history, culture, and thought of the period. Offered by the Department of Global Humanities in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, it lets students concentrate on a specific era, topic, or figure, or pursue the broader pre-modern period across literature, art, philosophy, and history. Completion requires a minimum of 30 units: at least three courses from a designated core list (9 units), at least two advanced courses from a further designated list (8 units), and 13 units of approved electives drawn from participating departments. Students may apply up to 15 units of transfer credit toward the certificate. The credential can be completed as a standalone qualification or have its units counted toward a bachelor's degree, major, or minor. Admission requires approval from the Department of Global Humanities advisor in addition to SFU's normal admission standards.
