Overview
SFU's MA in Archaeology is a traditional research degree in which students work closely with faculty in the Department of Archaeology to develop, write and defend a thesis. Requirements combine three graded courses and two terms of graduate seminar with the thesis itself, and defences are held on campus as juried evaluations. Most students complete the degree in two years across six terms, with scope to extend to three years where the research warrants it. Applications open in mid-October for entry the following September, and admission rests on a related bachelor's degree, a solid grade average and strong references. Graduate students are connected through the Archaeology Graduate Student Caucus and the wider Graduate Student Society.

Admission Requirements: Admission requires a bachelor's degree from SFU or an equivalent from a recognized institution, preferably in a related field, with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0/4.33 (3.5/4.33 is used as the threshold for entrance-award consideration), plus submitted evidence — usually references from qualified referees — of the ability to undertake advanced graduate studies in the applicant's area of interest. Proof of English-language proficiency is required as set out in the SFU Calendar's Graduate General Regulations 1.3.3: the university's current minimums are IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with at least 6.0 in each band, or TOEFL iBT 90 overall with at least 20 per section (PTE Academic 65/60, CAEL 70/60, and Duolingo 125/105 also accepted). Applications open October 15 and are due January 15, for a start the following September. The MA requires at least 33 units and a thesis, normally completed in six terms, with up to nine terms permitted.
