Urban Studies is a one-year certificate offered by the Department of Geography in Simon Fraser University's Faculty of Environment. It suits students considering a career in urban planning, governance, or consulting, studying the nature and functions of the contemporary city through an interdisciplinary lens that draws on geography, political science, sociology, and anthropology. The certificate can be completed alongside a student's primary degree program, giving students working knowledge of how cities function and are governed alongside formal training in another discipline. Coursework in the certificate covers urban theory and practice from multiple social-science perspectives, preparing graduates for work in municipal and regional planning offices, non-profit and community organizations, and consulting firms that deal with urban policy and development issues.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Urban Studies is a one-year certificate offered by the Department of Geography in the Faculty of Environment and is normally completed alongside another degree such as the BA in Human Geography; SFU publishes no separate entrance average for the certificate itself, so applicants enter through the Faculty of Environment's BA admission route. This requires a minimum of five approved Grade 12 courses, including English Studies 12 or English First Peoples 12 at a minimum of 70 percent, or the equivalent AP or IB course. Grade 11 prerequisites include English 11, Math 11, one approved Science 11 course, and one Social Studies 11 course. Grade 12 Course List A must include the English requirement, one science or math course, and one further List A course drawn from a wide humanities and social-science list; SFU's own approved-course list for this faculty includes 'Urban Studies 12' as one eligible BC course option. Admission is holistic across all approved Grade 11 and 12 marks, with no fixed published cut-off; students add the Urban Studies certificate afterward through their faculty advisor.
