Overview
The Data Science in Physics Certificate is offered by SFU's Department of Physics for students who want to combine physics with statistical analysis and computational methods. The program covers experimental data collection, processing, and analysis using statistical and computational approaches, preparing students to apply data science techniques to problems in quantum physics, astronomy, particle physics, health sciences, economics, and finance. The 22-unit curriculum includes physics laboratory courses (Physics Laboratory III, Advanced Physics Laboratory I) alongside statistics courses covering data science fundamentals, probability and statistics, analysis of experimental and observational data, and statistical learning and prediction, plus one elective from a list of upper-level physics courses. Instruction is delivered in person at the Burnaby campus. The certificate is intended to complement an undergraduate degree in physics, chemistry, engineering, life sciences, statistics, or mathematics, giving students practical skills in data modeling and prediction-making. Admission requires students to meet prerequisite course requirements and maintain a minimum cumulative GPA in the certificate coursework.
