The Key Capabilities in Data Science Certificate from UBC Extended Learning is a part-time, fully online program for professionals from any background who want practical data analysis skills without a prior technical foundation. Everyone starts with the required course in Python programming for data science and then adds at least two electives from Data Visualization, Introduction to Machine Learning and The Data Science Toolbox, for a total of three or four courses. Each course runs eight to nine weeks and represents roughly 50 hours of work, with a weekly commitment of about 8 to 10 hours for those who already code and 10 to 12 hours for beginners; facilitators support each cohort and hold virtual office hours. Coding or data analysis experience is not required to enrol. To earn the certificate, learners must pass the Python course and a minimum of two electives, completing the final project in each and scoring at least 70 percent.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: UBC Extended Learning states no minimum prior credential, GPA, or English-language test score (IELTS/TOEFL) for this certificate; it is open to applicants without prior technical, coding or data-analysis background, though experience with statistics or analytics is described as helpful rather than required. The one structural requirement the page sets is sequencing, not entrance screening: Programming in Python for Data Science must be completed before any elective, and applicants must register for electives with a start date after that course ends. To receive the certificate, applicants must complete the required course plus a minimum of two electives, achieving at least 70% in each course, then submit a certificate request form together with a CAD $175 application fee. No interview, portfolio, reference letter or language test is mentioned anywhere on the program page.
Application Details
Application Deadline:Domestic and international undergraduate applicants both apply through EducationPlannerBC for Winter Session 2027/28 (September 2027 entry) and Summer 2027: applications open in early October 2026 and the equal-consideration deadline is 15 January 2027, 11:59 p.m. PST, the same date for both groups; a few programs keep reviewing late applications on a space-available basis afterwards. Earlier dates apply only to entrance-award consideration -- 15 November 2026 for the International Scholars Program and 1 December 2026 for Presidential/Centennial/Beyond Tomorrow scholars. Several limited-entry programmes -- Law, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Nursing (advanced entry), Occupational/Physical Therapy, Social Work and Teacher Education -- set their own earlier deadlines from October 2026 through February 2027. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
