Program details

Overview

The Geographic Information Science Certificate is about the tools behind these decisions and the processes that go into developing them. You'll build skills in spatial analysis and modelling and learn how to communicate spatial data and information in digital form as maps, models and graphics. You can take this program to specialize further in your major or broaden your studies in another area.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: The certificate's own calendar entry sets no published admission GPA, standardized language-test score, portfolio or interview requirement; it instructs applicants to consult the Department of Geography advisor as early as possible, with formal advisor approval required before the certificate can be completed. Entry is otherwise governed by Simon Fraser University's standard undergraduate admission, summarised on the university's admission-requirements page: Canadian high-school applicants need at least five approved Grade 12 courses, including English Studies 12 or equivalent at 70% or better in Language Arts 11/English 12, filed through EducationPlannerBC; international secondary-school applicants are assessed on a first-semester senior-year transcript.

Application Details

Application Deadline: Domestic applicants apply through EducationPlannerBC, with one set of dates per applicant type rather than by citizenship. Fall 2027 entry: high-school-route applications open 1 October 2026 and close 31 January 2027, while transfer applications open 1 March 2027 and close 15 April 2027 (Education and Contemporary Arts transfer applicants may apply from 1 October 2026). Spring 2027 entry runs 1 July to 15 September 2026, and Summer 2027 entry runs 1 December 2026 to 15 January 2027. Admission documents are generally due 28 February 2027 (Fall) and offers must be accepted by 1 May. International applicants use the same EducationPlannerBC dates and portal; SFU publishes no separate international deadline. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
