Overview

Japanese Studies certificate is for students who aim to develop language competency in and cultural understanding of the Japanese language, culture and society. The certificate offers language courses up to the intermediate level that can build a solid foundation of all aspects in Japanese language as well as communicative competences in everyday settings. Furthermore, the certificate affords opportunities for students to explore and expand their interests and studies in topics related to Japan by offering a variety of elective courses across departments and faculties.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: The certificate's own page states plainly that there are no programme-specific admission requirements: students declare it by contacting the World Languages and Literatures advisor ([email protected]) rather than meeting a published GPA, language-test, portfolio or interview bar, and prior Japanese-language experience is not required, though it affects course placement. Entry is therefore governed by Simon Fraser University's standard undergraduate admission, summarised on the university's admission-requirements page: Canadian high-school applicants need at least five approved Grade 12 courses, including English Studies 12 or equivalent at 70% or better in Language Arts 11/English 12, filed through EducationPlannerBC, while international secondary-school applicants are assessed on a first-semester senior-year transcript.

Application Details

Application Deadline: Domestic applicants apply through EducationPlannerBC, with one set of dates per applicant type rather than by citizenship. Fall 2027 entry: high-school-route applications open 1 October 2026 and close 31 January 2027, while transfer applications open 1 March 2027 and close 15 April 2027 (Education and Contemporary Arts transfer applicants may apply from 1 October 2026). Spring 2027 entry runs 1 July to 15 September 2026, and Summer 2027 entry runs 1 December 2026 to 15 January 2027. Admission documents are generally due 28 February 2027 (Fall) and offers must be accepted by 1 May. International applicants use the same EducationPlannerBC dates and portal; SFU publishes no separate international deadline. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
