Overview
Built for educators and other professionals who work full-time, this Doctor of Education requires a minimum of 48 units anchored by two shared courses — Approaches to Educational Research and Seminar in Educational Theory — plus three specialization courses set by each EdD faculty team, a comprehensive examination, and an 18-unit doctoral thesis. The Educational Leadership specialization, for instance, adds courses on ethics and law, governance and reform, and accountability in leadership roles. Students are expected to complete all requirements within 18 terms and register in thesis coursework every term after admission.
Requirements
Minimum GPA:3.50 / 4.33
Admission Requirements: The EdD calendar entry states only that applicants must satisfy Simon Fraser University's general graduate admission requirements under Graduate General Regulation 1.3, adding that in exceptional circumstances an applicant who does not meet them may still be considered on the strength of superior scholarly or professional achievement. Under GGR 1.3, doctoral applicants need a master's degree from SFU or a recognized institution, or, lacking a master's, a bachelor's degree with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.5/4.33, or at least 3.67/4.33 (A-) on the last 60 credits of undergraduate coursework, plus demonstrated capacity for substantial original research; direct entry from a bachelor's requires completing at least 50% of the relevant master's-level coursework where the doctoral program itself sets no course requirements. International applicants must meet SFU's graduate English-language proficiency requirement: IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with a minimum of 6.0 in each band, or an equivalent score on TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, CAEL or Duolingo.
