Overview

This MA route in Curriculum and Instruction develops expertise in an equity framework for education, treating education broadly as a concept that includes schooling but also the wider social forces shaping knowledge in society. Students enter the MEd and ladder to the MA with faculty approval; the MA consists of a minimum of 25 units of coursework plus a master's thesis, a research investigation designed to generate or critically examine new knowledge in educational theory or practice, normally completed and approved over three terms. Classes are held in person across SFU's Burnaby, Surrey and Vancouver campuses in the late afternoon and early evening, with an annual intake of roughly 10 to 15 students. Candidates typically include educators and administrators moving into equity leadership, advocates in the immigrant and settlement services sector, adult educators, policy analysts, and diversity and equity officers, and the thesis route opens onto doctoral study.
