Overview
This 35-unit Master of Education prepares practicing educators to teach additional-language learners across local and international classrooms. All students complete three core courses -- EDUC 825 Second Language Learning and Education, EDUC 856 Sociocultural Perspectives on Education and Identity, and the EDUC 883 comprehensive examination -- plus at least two electives from a shared list that includes EDUC 836 Equity Issues in Language, Education, and Society, EDUC 854 Teachers as Agents of Change, and EDUC 855 Multicultural and Race Relations Education, among others. Applicants choose between two streams: Teaching English as an Additional Language (TEAL), which adds EDUC 824 Seminar in Second Language Teaching and is weighted toward TEAL theory, and Teaching Languages in Global Contexts (TLGC), built around international fieldwork courses such as EDUC 811 Fieldwork I and EDUC 835 Graduate Study in Second Language Education. Applicants typically need a bachelor's degree plus two years of full-time classroom teaching experience, a requirement waived for the TLGC stream; both streams otherwise follow SFU's standard graduate admission requirements under Graduate General Regulations 1.3, and the degree is designed to be completed within six terms at most.
Requirements
Minimum GPA:3.00 / 4.33
Admission Requirements: Admission normally requires two years of full-time classroom teaching experience; this requirement is waived for the Teaching Languages in Global Contexts stream. Beyond this program-specific condition, applicants must satisfy the University's general admission standard for a master's degree under Graduate General Regulation 1.3.6a: a bachelor's degree from SFU or an equivalent from a recognized institution, with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0/4.33 (B), or at least 3.33/4.33 (B+) on the final 60 undergraduate units. Applicants who lack the required teaching experience may still be considered where superior scholarly or professional achievement is demonstrated. Admission is granted to this specific degree and program stream rather than to the Faculty of Education generally. No programme-specific English-language test score is published; SFU's general graduate policy of IELTS Academic 6.5 overall (6.0 per section) or TOEFL 90 overall (20 per section) applies to non-native English speakers.
