Program details

Overview

This two-and-a-half-year program applies cross-sectional anatomy, pathology and physical-applications knowledge to performing examinations that produce diagnostic ultrasound images for a medical radiologist's interpretation. Students learn to produce images of internal body structures using hand-held acoustical scanning probes and a range of imaging techniques, developing the critical thinking, judgment and safe, competent care the profession requires. The curriculum follows the current National Competency Profiles Generalist approved by Sonography Canada, and graduates become eligible to sit Sonography Canada's national board examinations; passing the registry exams lets sonographers seek work in Ontario, where the profession falls under the province's regulatory college for medical radiation and imaging technologists.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Admission requires an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) with the majority of courses at the College (C), University (U), University/College (M) or Open (O) level plus Grade 12 English (ENG4U, ENG4C, EAE4C or EAE4U), Grade 12 Math (C or U), and senior-level Physics, Biology and Chemistry (C or U), or equivalent courses from the Pre-Health Sciences Pathway to Advanced Diplomas and Degrees or the Academic and Career Entrance programme, as stated on the programme's own admission-requirements page. This is an oversubscribed programme; the page advises applying by February 1 to be considered. Before placement, students must complete a Vulnerable Sector Police Clearance (valid one year), CPR-BLS, Standard First Aid, mask-fit testing, health-assessment records, and meet placement-site COVID-19 vaccination expectations. No separate language-proficiency scores are published, so international and non-native-English applicants are held to St. Clair College's institution-wide English requirement for higher-diploma programmes: IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0, TOEFL iBT 91 with no section below 22, PTE Academic 70, CAEL 70, CELPIP General 8.0 in each module, or Duolingo 120.
