Overview
The General Construction Carpentry Techniques program allows students to develop many of the skills needed to build a new home or structure or to renovate an old one. Students learn to produce sketches, work from blueprints, develop building details, and assess construction sites. They are taught carpentry skills from base footings to framing, interior and exterior finishing, and fine finishing techniques. The program also focuses on energy-efficient and green/sustainable construction practices and methods. Building and installation techniques are practiced through hands-on construction activities and projects and students hone their skills on a major construction or renovation project in their final semester of study.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission requires an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent, including Grade 12 English at the C, U or E level and Grade 11 Math. English-language proficiency follows the institution's requirement for certificate, diploma and advanced-diploma programmes: IELTS Academic overall 6.0 with no band below 5.5, TOEFL iBT 78, PTE Academic 55, or Duolingo English Test 110 overall with no sub-score below 85; domestic applicants meet it through the Grade 12 English prerequisite. Applicants missing the academic prerequisites may enrol in the college's Career/College Prep programme, offered free to Ontario residents 18 or older, and those with transcripts from outside Canada are directed to the college's transcript-evaluation process.
