Overview
The Bachelor of Applied Science Degree in Engineering foundation year prepares you with a strong knowledge base from which to build a solid and rewarding academic and professional career. Along with other first-year engineering students, you’ll take courses in math, chemistry, physics and communication to gain the fundamental knowledge you need to succeed as an engineer. You'll take two engineering classes where you’ll learn how to use your problem-solving and critical-thinking skills to solve real-world problems and challenges. Weekly design studios allow you to apply the knowledge you are using in your other core classes to work on engineering design projects, before applying to your specialization for the rest of your studies.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission runs through UBC Vancouver's Faculty of Applied Science (Engineering) stream. Canadian secondary-school applicants present English Studies 12 or English First Peoples 12, Pre-Calculus 12, Chemistry 12 and Physics 12; UBC states that outstanding candidates missing Chemistry 12 or Physics 12 are still encouraged to apply and are reviewed case by case. The program-specific part of the academic assessment is built from grades in Language Arts, Sciences and Mathematics & Computation courses, and applied maths courses such as Foundations of Math or Workplace Math are excluded wherever Pre-Calculus 12 is a prerequisite. IB applicants present IB Mathematics (Analysis and Approaches at Standard or Higher Level, or Applications and Interpretations at Higher Level; Applications and Interpretations SL and Math Studies are not accepted), IB Chemistry and IB Physics, with the same case-by-case review for a missing IB Chemistry or IB Physics. International applicants present the equivalent qualifications from their own curriculum: UBC applies the same degree requirements to international curricula, and applicants from an English-medium secondary school must also show at least 70 per cent in Grade 11 or Grade 12 English. Everyone must meet UBC's English Language Admission Standard - for example IELTS Academic 6.5 with no part below 6.0, or TOEFL iBT 90 with 22 in reading and listening and 21 in writing and speaking for a test sat before 21 January 2026, or 4.5 overall with 5 in listening, 4.5 in reading and writing and 4 in speaking on the 1-6 scale that replaced it from that date.
Application Details
Start Date:September 2027 - entry is to UBC's Winter Session, which runs September 2027 to April 2028 (Term 1 September to December, Term 2 January to April). UBC also runs a Summer Session from May to August, but not every degree admits to it.
Application Deadline:Apply by 15 January 2027, 11:59 p.m. PST, for September 2027 entry (Winter Session 2027/28) - this is UBC's university-wide undergraduate deadline and it is the same date for Canadian and international applicants, not a date set by this program. The online application opens in early October 2026 through EducationPlannerBC. Earlier dates apply only to major entrance awards: 15 November 2026 for international applicants (UBC International Scholars Program) and 1 December 2026 for Canadian citizens and permanent residents (Presidential Scholars, UBC Centennial Scholars Entrance and Beyond Tomorrow Scholars). UBC advises applying by the deadline because some programs stop accepting applications on that date; later applications may be considered but are not given the same priority. Document deadlines (transcripts, English-language evidence) are issued to each applicant in the Applicant Service Centre after applying.
