Program details
Overview
Disability Studies is an interdisciplinary program offered jointly with RRC Polytech that examines disability as a social, scientific, cultural, historical, and political construction. Using a social-model lens, coursework addresses topics including human rights, ethics, adaptive physical activity, eugenics, socialization, aging, education, and universal design, moving from a critique of the bio-medical model toward social and rights-based understandings of disability. Students must be accepted, enrol, and study at both institutions, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree, offered in three-year, four-year, or Honours format, from The University of Winnipeg together with a Disability and Community Support Diploma from RRC Polytech. Students pursuing another major may also add Disability Studies as a Minor. Graduates work in fields such as teaching, research, government policy analysis, the non-profit and health-care sectors, and tourism.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants must meet The University of Winnipeg's general undergraduate admission requirements; no specific high-school courses are required. Applicants whose first language is not English, and who are not from an English-exempt country, must meet the university's general English-language proficiency requirement.
