Program details

Overview

This Doctor of Philosophy is a research-intensive degree based in the Faculty of Science that combines life-science research with training in policy and communication. Research areas include genetics, genomics, bioinformatics, cell biology, physiology, behavioural ecology, and natural resource management, alongside coursework in science and ethics and science and public policy that situates research within national and international contexts. Degree requirements include a thesis project, a two-part candidacy examination completed within the first two years, at least 12 credit hours of coursework, mandatory science-communication training, and participation in at least two outreach events. Expected time to completion is four years, with a maximum of seven. The program is designed for candidates with an academic background in biology or a related science who want to pair advanced original research with the ability to communicate that research to policymakers and the public, suiting students aiming at research careers that intersect with science policy, government science advising, or public engagement roles.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: The programme's own page states no independent admission criteria such as a minimum degree, GPA, or entrance-test score; instead, applicants must first identify and secure agreement from a faculty supervisor doing research in their field before applying, and admission proceeds through that supervisor relationship together with the standard Faculty of Graduate Studies application. Because Bioscience and Policy is not one of the programmes UWinnipeg lists as setting its own English-language minimums, its international applicants are assessed against the university's general thresholds instead, submitted where applicable. The application, due by February 1, must include transcripts from every post-secondary institution attended, two academic references, and a research-proposal summary of up to 300 words plus an optional two-page description. In rare cases, such as a supervisor's funding timeline, a Spring (May) start can be arranged instead of the usual intake.

Application Details

Application Deadline: Domestic applicants (Canadian citizens, permanent residents and refugees) apply directly to the University of Winnipeg: for the Faculties of Arts, Business and Economics, Kinesiology and Science the suggested deadline is July 2 for Fall (September) entry, November 1 for Winter (January) entry and March 1 for Spring (May) entry; the Faculty of Education recommends March 1 for high-school and mature applicants, with a final deadline of June 1 subject to space. International applicants are advised to apply by June 15 (Fall, shown on the live page as an 'extended' deadline), October 15 (Winter) or February 15 (Spring). All of these are suggested rather than firm cut-offs: late applications may still be considered, and admission runs on an effectively rolling basis until a term is full. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
