Overview

The French certificate builds French language and intercultural skills through a mix of courses, field-school opportunities, and immersive options to study abroad. A hands-on approach develops cross-disciplinary ability in spoken and written communication, covering literature and culture as well. Teaching methods differ across sections to suit a range of learning styles.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Entry to the Modern Languages Certificate (French) requires BC Grade 12, an Adult Dogwood, or mature-student status. English-language proficiency may be met by any one of: English 12 or English 12 First Peoples with a minimum of 73% within the last five years; Level 4 on the composition section of the Language Proficiency Index within the last two years; completion of English 0600; or completion of ESAL 0570 together with ESAL 0580 with a grade of C+ or better. No standardized international test such as IELTS or TOEFL, minimum GPA, portfolio, interview or work-experience condition is published, and the page does not state intake dates for the certificate.

Application Details

Application Deadline: Domestic applicants (Canadian citizens and permanent residents) apply directly to TRU: for the September (Fall) intake the deadline is 1 May, for January (Winter) it is 1 September, and for the May (Summer) intake it is 1 January; applications for most programs open 1 October, and a deadline falling on a weekend or statutory holiday moves to the next working day. International applicants follow the same intake structure with deadlines of 1 May (September), 1 October (January) and 1 February (May); TRU still reviews later applications where space remains, though high-volume programs can close early, so admission runs on a rolling basis around these published cut-offs for the 2027 entry cycle. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
