Program details

Overview

This certificate develops world language ability and intercultural skills through a mix of coursework, field school opportunities, and study abroad options. An interactive teaching approach builds cross-disciplinary skills in written and oral communication, covering literature and culture, with instructors drawing on varied methods to suit different learning styles. The aim is a solid academic grounding in world languages and cultures.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Domestic entry requires Grade 12 completion or mature-student status, plus English Studies 12 or English First Peoples 12 at a minimum of 73% (or, in its place, TRU's ESAL 0570 and 0580, or ENGL 0600/0601). The certificate page publishes no standardized international English test score of its own, though it is explicitly open to international applicants; Thompson Rivers University's general admission page sets the undergraduate-certificate threshold at IELTS Academic 6.5 with no band below 6.0, or TOEFL iBT 88 with no section below 20. Applicants short of a requirement may qualify for the Flexible Entry pathway, completing missing prerequisites while taking program courses. Intakes run in September and January.

Application Details

Start Date: September and January
Application Deadline: Domestic applicants (Canadian citizens and permanent residents) apply directly to TRU: for the September (Fall) intake the deadline is 1 May, for January (Winter) it is 1 September, and for the May (Summer) intake it is 1 January; applications for most programs open 1 October, and a deadline falling on a weekend or statutory holiday moves to the next working day. International applicants follow the same intake structure with deadlines of 1 May (September), 1 October (January) and 1 February (May); TRU still reviews later applications where space remains, though high-volume programs can close early, so admission runs on a rolling basis around these published cut-offs for the 2027 entry cycle. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
