Overview
Toronto Metropolitan University's Doctor of Philosophy in Media & Design Innovation is a practice-based doctoral program administered by The Creative School. It allows scholarly exploration of the creative process across a range of media and design fields, combining academic research with hands-on creative practice. The program is aimed at practitioners and makers already working in creative fields who want to pursue doctoral-level research grounded in their own practice, rather than a purely theoretical dissertation. Students complete coursework alongside a practice-based research project or dissertation that documents and analyzes their creative process and its contribution to the field. First offered in Fall 2021, the program trains graduates for careers that combine creative practice with research, including academic positions, research roles in design and media industries, and leadership positions requiring both practical creative skill and the ability to conduct and communicate original research.
