International Relations is offered as a limited-enrolment specialist program through the University of Toronto's Faculty of Arts & Science, administered within Trinity College and drawing on faculty from History, Economics, and Political Science. The curriculum examines the causes of conflict and the maintenance of peace, the exercise of power within the international system, and the changing role of state and non-state actors in international decision-making, combining historical analysis, political theory, and economic methods across four years. Early coursework establishes a foundation in economics and introductory social science; later years add political science and international-relations courses before moving into specialized seminars and electives in regional studies, economics, and political theory. Admission requires prior completion of a set number of credits and minimum grades that vary by year and by demand for available spaces. As a specialist program, it carries a heavier concentration of required and elective coursework in international relations than the corresponding major, and suits students seeking deeper, research-oriented preparation in international affairs or diplomatic history before graduate study.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: This is a limited-enrolment specialist administered through the Faculty of Arts & Science, open to students who have completed at least 4.0 credits. Applicants need either ECO101H1 and ECO102H1 with a minimum grade of 63% in each, or ECO105Y1 with a minimum of 80%, plus 2.0 credits from an approved list (GGR112H1, HIS102Y1, HIS103Y1, MUN100H1, MUN110H1, MUN130H1, MUN140H1, POL101H1, POL106H1, POL107H1, POL109H1, TRN150Y1, TRN151Y1, TRN152Y1, TRN160Y1, TRN162Y1, VIC181H1, VIC183H1, VIC184H1 or VIC185H1) with a minimum grade of 70% in each. The program does not publish a separate English-language or standardized-test requirement, following the University of Toronto's general enrolment process. Admission uses a Variable Minimum Grade Average reset every year according to available spaces and the number of applicants, so meeting the published minimum grades does not guarantee a place.
